After School Sports
Ultimate Frisbee
This year, 2007, marks an exciting beginning of a new chapter in the Tremuloides saga.
Watershed is a small school, and that presents a challenge to fielding large sports teams. We have been able to be creative with athletics and team sports. Some students get involved with local after-school independent teams or competitions such as baseball, hockey, skiing, and tennis.
Watershed has had a Sailing Team that competed against other Maine High School teams, and has a very active Ultimate Frisbee team (the Tremuloides).
We look forward to building our physical education program at Watershed. The sky's the limit!
Tremuloides
Ultimate Frisbee came to Watershed during the school's first year, 2003. The school was brand new and was home to 12 students. The team was brand new and was comprised of a large number of them. In the spring of 2004, the team, then without a name, competed in only one tournament, the Maine state junior tournament held in Brunswick. A good time was had by all, especially being beaten over the head (quite literally) with the long-huck play entitled "Slaughterhouse" by much more experienced Brunswick.
Vinnie battles for the disc
Spring 2005 brought a new level of organization to the team, with new players, a new name, and more playing. The name Tremuloides was taken from the Latin name of the Poplar tree, "Populus Tremuloides," which many team members had learned in the Observational Natural History Of the Woods course (ONHOW), and had all found extremely cool. Jerseys were snazzily crafted during several lunchtimes from white undershirts and many markers, and featured numbers such as Pi, Infinity, 473,231,487, seventeen and a half, 0, and many others. No two were alike, and they were carefully manufactured for teammates by other teammate who often used ridiculous or meaningless nicknames for the backs. These shirts hold a special place in Tremuloides' history. Tremuloides competed in the state tournament in Camden in 2005, winning the SOTG (Spirit of the Game) award in style with some quite fantastic and innovative after-game cheers. Tremuloides especially enjoyed playing against good ultimate friends the Bangor Eutyls and Camden High School.
The 2006 Team
2006: 2 Tournaments! States plus a new invitational at our pals' in Camden. Still a small team from a small school, dealing with the joy of playing tourneys straight through without subs!
The spring of 2007 marked an exciting beginning of a new chapter in the Tremuloides saga. A promising group of energetic freshmen promise to take over the reins from the current core group of original senior members for future years of disc. For the first time, the team consisted of a significantly larger number of players than the number required on the field! Tremuloides has a logo, discs, and printed jerseys all in the works, and will be attending at least three tournaments! Watch out for shocking new original chants, as well.
Tremuloides would like to end this blurb in the words of William Shakespeare: "Ultimate!"
